The Hobbit: An Unexpected JourneyDecember 6, 2012
The first movie in The Hobbit trilogy is out and it seems to be doing well. According to IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0903624/), it has achieved an average rating of 9.2/10 from 7,465 users.
You can find the official trailer for this first movie at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDnYMbYB-nU.
The movie is not scheduled for release in Canada until December 14, but my impression of the trailer is that it is like Lord of the Rings, but without the battle scenes. And there is still all that great New Zealand scenery. In case you were wondering, New Zealand is a thousand miles in length with very varied geography, so it will take more than a few films to exhaust all that scenery.
Meanwhile Metacritic (http://www.metacritic.com/movie/the-hobbit-an-unexpected-journey) gives the Hobbit movie a generally favorable 66/100 based on 6 reviews. Those reviews range from a high of 100/100 from Total Film (“As epic, grandiose, and emotionally appealing as the previous pictures”) to a low of 40/100 from Box Office Magazine (“…your quest for epic, truly entertaining filmmaking will be more successful if you just stay home.”)
The overall impression from the reviews is that this is a lot like the Lord of the Rings movies. So, if you are a Lord of the Rings fan and can’t get enough of Middle Earth you are probably going to love this movie. If you think that you got your fill with the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, then you may not want to bother coming back from more.
As someone who read all the Lord of the Rings books and The Hobbit at a relatively early age, I will be one of those looking forward to seeing this movie.
