The Prime Directive of Nerd-dom: Never, EVER, get mixed up Between Star Wars and Star Trek
March 1, 2013Star Trek and Star Wars are pretty much the same thing, right? After all they have similar sounding names and they are both doing stuff in space. And they have big ships and good guys and bad guys, and empires. Of course, in Star Wars you only have the empire and the rebellion and it is really black and white stuff. Star Trek in contrast is a multipolar world, with the Klingon and Romulan empires, as well as the Federation.
But here I am showing that I’m a Trekkie at heart. You see, I care about the distinction. To me Star Wars was just spectacle. Ok, I loved the battle for the Ice Planet of Hoth and maybe it really is right up there with the Battle for Helm’s Deep in Lord of the Rings, but overall it’s a pretty black and white good guys vs. bad guys even if it is way up in space.
Maybe for Trekkies, Star Trek is like Grand Opera and Star Wars is like High School Musical. Anyway I’ll quit before all the Star Wars fans out there put on their Darth Vader costumes and start using the Force to make me choke.
So how do you violate the prime directive of Nerd-dom? Well here’s an example.
“Most people agree I’m presenting a fair deal. The fact that they don’t take it means that I should somehow, you know, do a Jedi mind meld with these folks and convince them to do what’s right.”
Well it turns out that Jedi’s have a mind trick and that it is the Vulcan’s (like the half-Vulcan, half-human Spock) who use the mind meld on Star Trek.
And horror of horrors. The violation of the prime directive shown above was made by none other than US nerd-in-chief President Obama.
But maybe this is the White House being incredibly devious. Instead of agonizing over the fact that the country has fallen over the fiscal cliff, the legions of Trekkies can now debate just how damaging this violation of the prime directive really is. And with approval of the House Republicans lagging the president’s by 20 or 30 points, jumping over the fiscal cliff is starting to look a bit lemming-like for the Grand Old Tea Party.
And amid all the hand-wringing and the arbitrary cutting, no doubt the U.S deficit will continue heading to infinity and beyond.
